Tango monastery

Tango monastery is enriched with history, and many beliefs, many mythologies are associated with this place. It dates back to the earliest times of 13th century. The monastery now also serves as the educational institute where monks study the religious texts. The interior walls are beautifully painted. This place is located near Cheri Mountain and is about 30 minute drive from the city. The path to the monastery is steep and usually it takes a 45 minutes hike to reach the temple.



The monastery was founded by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo and its present form was rebuilt by Tenzin Rabgye in 17thcentury. The monastery is built upon a cave where Tibetan Lana Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal meditated and there is a rock in the caves which was identified as the ‘Hayagriva' or the ‘Horse’s head’. Hence the name ‘Tango’. The monastery has six temples inside it and all these temples have different deities. Tulku Lhakhang houses the statue of Buddha, of 8 main spiritual sons of Buddha, all these are made in gold and copper by Panchen Deva of Nepal. There are statues of Avalokiteshwara, Guru Rinpoche statured in Longku Lhakhang. The third floor stores the statue of Buddha Amitayus and temples of Dharmakaya.


Above mentioned are just few revered temples of this place out of numerous temples and statues. Ensure that you carry all the essentials as there are no facilities near the monastery.
